Steve C left this review about The Plaza (JD Wetherspoon)

The Plaza is a converted cinema that is quite uninteresting around the entrance, but at the rear it opens into a split-level seating area with a mezzanine and Art Deco décor. The rear wall is an impressive double height back window, and out the back is a well-tended patio garden. The bar counter up the right supports the usual standard and premium keg alongside two banks of six hand pumps. Adnam’s Broadside was available alongside Salopian’s Oracle, Half Life and Hop Twister, plus the usual three suspects. Brains SA and Adnam’s Broadside were ‘coming soon’. It’s OK in here if you can bag a seat at the rear.

Imposing cinema conversion; quite plain in parts, but with with some fine Art Deco features preserved too. I'm not sure that the small mezzanine really helps, though, as it partially obscures the huge picture window at the far end where the screen once was. Also has a substantial rear patio beer garden. Two banks of five handpumps, with Ruddles, Doom Bar and Abbot plus Hobgoblin Gold, Oakham Citra, Byatt's Regal Blonde and Emery from Falstaff (£2.10) available on this visit.

The Plaza is an old cinema conversion. The interior is quite impressive and despite current Covid restrictions, you can still walk through it en route to the large garden at the rear.

On entering, we were told that the Wetherspoon's app was not working and that it could be a wait of up to 1 hour or more for service. The guy at the entrance had assumed wrongly that we were after food, so with an order placed on the supposedly broken app, we were actually served very quickly.

Greene King Abbot & Ruddles Best were on as usual. The guest beer was Slater's 1 Hop. On the way out, I did also notice Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon cider. That hadn't been available to purchase on the app, as far as I could tell.

The rear garden is spacious and there were still plenty of tables available, despite this being the first Saturday afternoon of pub opening this year. The most popular tables were those in the late afternoon sunshine. Those in the shade were a little chilly.

The best pub Rugeley had to offer on this visit.
