This may look like a rather grand conversion, but it actually dates from the mid-19th century, then the Peterborough Arms with several later incarnations, such as the Southern Cross. It’s a while since the last reviewer visited and oh what a difference eight years makes.
Inside and this is a very swish gastropub indeed, a far cry from the Rose up the road. There’s bare flooring as expected, a grand bar front, some kilims, grey wall panelling along with a little bare brick by way of balance. Items of note are the coffered ceiling and curved front windows, a tiny soupçon of etched glass hinting at past glories. Grand lighting is minimal and at centre, there’s arboreal décor in the form of some sort of rock garden, with a tree growing out of it. Further décor comprises framed prints with brass picture lamps. Furniture is conventional, with some studded velour banquette semi-circular booths. Half the tables were laid for dining, though few were occupied.
Two ales were on offer, Tribute and Naked Ladies at £2.75 a half and very nice too, served by professional staff.
This is quite a nice place in its own sort of way, the kind of venue I’d take someone for a Kier Royale, me gazing into her eyes, seductively caressing my lips with the tip of my tongue. But as a pub…well it’s not really a pub anymore.

Rather scruffy Greene King pub in an very expensive area. Visited to watch the Lions demolish Australia. Quiet at lunch time on a Sat. 2 handpulled beers on with the IPA in good nick. Carling was only £2.30 a pint and seemed to be the best seller.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Southern Cross

A Greene King pub, now back to its previous name after a period when it was called the Peterborough. Located in good location overlooking Eel Brook Common, it has an attractive frontage with full height bay windows each side of the main entrance. Inside, the high ceilings (and aforementioned large windows) mean that it has a light and airy feel. However, given the exterior symmetry, it comes as a slight surprise to find the bar to one side rather than being directly in front of you when entering. The need (or choice?) of a spiral staircase up to the function room or down to the toilets is also a bit curious. There is the usual mix of modern furniture you tend to get following refurbishments, plus a small amount of outdoor seating at the front. Beer-wise, there are just two handpumps usually offering Abbot and IPA (but the former was off on my last visit). You may also find some of the customers rather loud and the bar staff disinterested. Overall, it is all getting rather tatty and is in need of a revamp and/or better management - rating reduced by 2 points.
