My first visit for more than five years, and someone has evidently spent a bit of money making the interior look a lot smarter than it did. On the bar are two ciders and two beers from Kelham Island, Pale Rider and its Easy cousin. My visit was early on a midweek evening, when any post-work crowd would have dissipated, leaving just two other customers. Apparently it's busier at weekends, with Saturday nights drawing a crowd that I will have no need to make a mental note to avoid, involving as it does cross-dressing karaoke.

A quick visit tonight found the pub in different hands and with a drastically changed beer policy. Only Black Sheep Bitter was available, apart from the usual lager and kegs fonts, and a real cider also on hand pump. The experimental partnership with Blue Bee Brewery has not been a success, apparently. Please ignore my suggestion in last year's review about taking this one in when doing a Kelham Island crawl.

The pub's location means that it is busier at lunch times and early evening and dead for the rest of the night, for this is the heart of Sheffield's old office quarter. I used to work in the old headquarters building of the National Coal Board just along the road, and the Cranes was a frequent location for lunches and the odd pint or two after work. The closure of the business I was working for and the closure of this pub may have been a coincidence, but it is now open again and with a vastly improved beer offering.

The former landlord had a bit of a take it or leave it attitude to his real ale drinkers, though I've had many a decent pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord here over the years. The new regime has Sharps Doom Bar and Kelham Island Easy Rider instead, but they also have beers from Welbeck Abbey (Worksop) and the local brewery Blue Bee, plus Old Rosie cider on the half dozen hand pumps spread around the large and impressive bar.

On my recent visit, the first for nearly three years, nothing had changed as far as the physical lay out of the pub was concerned. There's still that slightly odd smell upon entering, a combination of old cigarette smoke and sweat, perhaps, that seems to linger in the carpets and upholstery, or maybe it's just a figment of my imagination. This is in fact a very comfortable and pleasant pub to sit in, with well padded upholstered bench seating and smart chairs and tables. There are stained glass panels separating the various areas, and although the pub is basically all one room surrounding a semi-circular bar, there is still a distinction between the two parts of the room accessed through the choice of doors at the entrance - the old public bar to the right, the old lounge to the left.

I was impressed with the Bees Knees Bitter that I had, and my daughter enjoyed her stout, despite its ridiculous name: Lustin' for Stout. In fact, we stayed for a second round of drinks, and I would happily have had another but I had promised to introduce her to the nearby Grapes, so we had to leave. One to consider if you're doing the "usual suspects" on Kelham Island, this is only a short step and on the way back into town.
