The Devonshire Cat closed at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, citing declining trade and high business rates. The impression is that they were trying to capture a smallish demographic (students *and* their parents?) and hadn't sufficiently moved with the times. After a period of closure it reopened this autumn under a new and incomprehensible name and with more of an emphasis on music and youth. There are two hand pumps with Bradfield Farmers Blonde and Belgian Blue on at the time of my visit, and the latter was served too warm and into a glass that may have recently exited the glass washer; this was a pretty average-to-poor drink. I didn't do an inventory of the keg offerings, but a quick look around suggested that there was nothing "craft" about them. There are music events advertised, and the weekend closing time of 3am suggests that students aren't expected to get early nights these days. There was some fairly upbeat music while I was here, though there were more staff than punters at 4:30 on a Wednesday afternoon. I used to enjoy the occasional visit here for some of the fairly adventurous cask and craft keg beers on offer, but those days are gone and I can't imagine returning under the present regime.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Devonshire Cat

Very different from my last visit over ten years ago - remodelled inside and even the repainted exterior of the block of student flats above make it almost seem like a new building on the same site. Now has a large central servery and plenty of seating of different types around it. I understand that the pub has been operated by Abbeydale since 2013, and four of its beers - including a decent Deception - were amongst the cask ales being dispensed from the three banks of four handpumps (although a few were unclipped on this visit). Plenty of interesting craft keg and bottled offerings, numerous gins and a full menu too so there is plenty here for those with different tastes. However, I would echo the comments from others about it being difficult to quickly work out exactly what beers are available, but it's still a good pub though.

I can't really add to the previous review. The pub may have excellent beer, but for the traditionalist it lacks. Add to that the presence of many students above, which probably explains why the place has the feel of a student bar.
For the record, my half of Abbydale's Deception New Zealand Pale Ale was very good and at £1.65, was bang-on average price for day. However, when in a pub, I prefer to have a thatched roof above my head rather than students.
