The pub goes back 300 years to June 1716 and was built near a bowling green and legend has it that the name of the pub celebrated a tree which stood next to the bowling green. The pub was smaller than it is today.
The beam across the ceiling halfway along the bar indicates the back wall of the 18th Century building. The pub also had its own brewery in the back yard, which produced beer until the early twentieth Century.
The pub was a free house until 1928, when it was taken over by Lamb Brewery from Frome, who extended it and added oak panelled walls.
The pub consists of three oak panelled rooms and serves five ales and a choice of four ciders. Also has no music or background music. Beer wise, we went for Plain Ales IPA.

ORIGINAL REVIEW June 2011.
Authentic town centre pub with an interesting wood pannelled interior.Has been a consistent GBG entry and this is well deserved. There tends to be an emphasis on West Country breweies and on my trip Cotleigh Owlszat,Butcombe Bitter,an excellent RCH Pitchfork together with a house brew Old Green Ale was available with two handpumps having clips reversed. This is a city centre pub that should be included on any trip around the hosteleries.

UPDATE
The national inventory interior is still very impressive, but after a change of hand it was very quiet on my Saturday evening visit and the doorman outside had nothing to do .The real ale offer was less than impressive featuring Butcombe Gold,Conquest IPA,Prescott Spring Seasons Best and RCH Pitchfork ,which tasted a bit tired and unremarkable.I've tempered my enthusiasm.

This pub is on CAMRA’s National Inventory of heritage pubs – i.e. those with largely unspoilt interiors. This one still retains its separate drinking areas and what looks like inter-war panelling. As you enter there’s a small room through a doorway on the left; then past that room the bar counter’s on the left; then past the counter at the back is another very comfortable room. Furnishings are traditional – banquettes and normal tables and chairs – and the flooring around the bar is attractive parquet. An unusual feature here is the shelving cabinet near the bar counter bearing what looked like a full set of Encyclopaedia Britannica.

They weren’t selling food when we were in on Tuesday lunchtime, but they did have five ales on – a house ale called Old Green Tree (obviously!) (£3.30 a pint), brewed by Blindman Brewery; Pitchfork Golden Bitter; Butcombe Gold; Three Daggers Ale; and Abbey Ales Chorister.

This is a delightful, quite small unspoilt pub. This is another one that is definitely worth a visit if in Bath.
