Will Larter left this review about The Crown Inn

I've passed this pub many times when staying at Clun but never found it open until my trip last autumn when I had a hire car and was staying briefly near Bishops Castle, rather than my usual cycling trips based at Clun. At the time it was opening midweek late afternoons and noon at weekends, but closed Mondays. They were gearing up for the beer festival that weekend (I think this is a Clun Valley festival, with minibus links between the pubs) and had four hand pumps on the go, two from Hobsons, one each from Ludlow and Wye Valley (see photo). One of the Hobsons beers was proving troublesome to pour so I went for the Ludlow which was very good (NBSS 3.5).

The people running it were giving the pub every chance, with food from Thursday (fish & chips) to Sunday (bookings recommended), quiz nights, occasional live music and a friendly welcome. Unfortunately the energy price rises and other cost of living crisis knock-ons caused them to give up the pub in February this year (see Facebook).

Real Ale Ray left this review about The Crown Inn

A 17th Century Inn positioned on the right when entering the village of Newcastle. This pub was nearly lost a couple of years ago when it became a B & B only. Thanks to the local residents, this pub is now back to trading as a public house. They still offer a couple of rooms to let, but the main focus is on good beer and food.
We sat in the main bar area and positioned ourselves at some settles near the window, after chatting to the landlord. Four pumps with three ales on, Ludlow Gold, Hobsons Best and Hobsons Snuffly Nose Hedge Grog. I went for the Hobsons Best, which was in good shape. The bar area had a log burning stove and a quarry tiled floor. The original stone walls had been painted white at some stage, which was a let down and the makeshift marine ply bar front also looked out of place. A fourth ale was going on hand pump as we were leaving, which was encouraging.

Three room country pub. One room for dining, one for drinking and a games room with a pool table.

Drinking room is whitewashed walls and stone flooring, functional pub furntiture.

Four reals one - Oakham, Brains SA, Hobsons Bitter and the Ludlow Gold that I chose. Fine condition, served in the correct glass.

Lovely chatty staff.
