A deceptively large town pub which extends backwards and upwards, with fairly traditional furnishings especially in the front rooms, although some emphasis on the steak restaurant part behind. This wasn't helped by Covid reservation requirements, but it seemed pleasant enough for drinking provided space available. Ales on handpump were Wainwright and Alnwick Amber, the latter being very drinkable.

Called in the other day after doing a bit of research on WhatPub, but at the bar I noticed Rocking Rudloph, Wainwright, and one pump off. Not enough to tempt me on the ale front so I decided to try elsewhere.

Some market square pubs can be at bit rough, but Alnwick's is quite smart; perhaps that's because it's not on the Market Square. There seems to have been a recent refurbishment, in traditional style but, in my opinion, rather over the top. There are three hand pumps on the bar, with Black Sheep Bitter, Wainwright and Wychwood Dirty Tackle, a seasonal, rugby themed beer, available at the time of our visit. I went for the Black Sheep, which was in good condition. I quite liked it here, though as with all the pubs I visited in Alnwick on this, my first time in the town, it was good without being anything special.
