Bar attached to a hotel with a pool table to rear left. No real ales - just keg rubbish.

Large pub and hotel to the west of the High St and a damn sight better than the Barrow Arms that we had previously visited!

No ale on tap but a good selection of bottles, I went for a bottle of Moorhouse’s Pendle Witches Brew @ 5.1%. Served at the right temperature and keenly priced. Again this seems more like a lager drinkers pub with a decent range of European lagers on including Peroni which kept my travelling companion happy.

Food was very popular & it looked quite good. All the tables in the back rooms were laid for diners & the large front bar is u shaped with high and low tables & seats.

One of the better pubs in the town centre and was certainly worth a stop.

Originally the Hartington Hotel (after local landowner Lord Hartington) but expanded through a number of former shops, this all encompassing Hotel/Bar/Restaurant situated just off the town centre wasn’t on my list of essential visits whilst in town but was more of a lucky dip convenience stop in more ways than one.

The interior rambles around a central bar with a couple of extended recesses but is generally quite run of the mill when it comes to fixtures and fittings with a few local artist offerings and pictures of various Rugby League teams being the most notable features. There were multiple TVs aimed at sport fans and some non-intrusive piped music. The absence of customers at peak time on a Saturday night suggests that the door staff were somewhat unnecessary (unless thay had done a good job of turning everyone away but then I probably wasn’t at my most sober or sensible myself at the time and I got in with no quibbles).

Beer wise there were no ales (don’t get fooled by the Freehouse signage) so I settled for a Jennings keg bitter which was neither here nor there. There was also a cheap and cheerful food menu with prices around £5-£8.

The place served its purpose at the time of asking without leaving any great impressions but if you’re not too fussy about beers or blandness, it does a job.
