The Guards barracks at Caterham on the Hill closed twenty years ago now but most of the pubs on the hill still have the impression that they're more suited to serving hard drinking squaddies than well heeled Surrey commuters, and the casual visitor seeking refreshment could be forgiven for pushing on to somewhere more picturesque. However there are a few spots well worth a look, including the King and Queen.
It's a rambling old building, and became a pub well before the area started being built up. There's a smallish public bar at the front, and two larger areas to the rear served, unusually, through a small hatch. It all remains a very traditional wet-led establishment with the Fullers range in very presentable condition. They do do food but that's not, thankfully, the main purpose of the place.
To summarize, this one has stayed below the radar of Fuller's refurbishment department and is well worth a visit if your in the area. Let's hope it remains that way.
