Originally The Royal Oak, this splendid village pub was closed for a while but reopened after substantial renovation. It sits in the centre of an affluent Dorset village on the edge of a AONB, off the beaten track. There is a large garden – about 5 acres, apparently- and a decent sized car park. They also host camper vans. The garden has a couple of old shepherds' huts which are used for B&B. The house is Georgian, and the downstairs has been re-shaped to provide a L-shaped bar at the front formed from 3 previous rooms, a small lounge and a skittle alley, the latter very active and forming a core component of village social life. The décor and furniture are minimalist, which gives it a modern yet comfortable feel. The staff are welcoming and the locals civilised, for the most part. Food is good quality pub grub, freshly cooked, plus there is a pizza oven in the garden; snacks are available for dogs. Two ales on, Exmoor Hound Dog and Yeovil Lynx Wildcat. The Hound Dog was in perfect condition, while the Yeovil was OK – well-kept but not one of my favourites. Well worth spending time here and maybe using it as a base for exploring the area.
