A better than average Lakeland pub, one that could afford to be quite a bit worse but still require a visit after completing a walk on the surrounding spectacular fells. My most memorable visit was after climbing Scafell Pike one Christmas Day. I set off during the only dry spell of a sodden day, and pretty soon all the paths had turned to becks and the becks had become raging torrents. I arrived here a few hours later after wading through the valley, to find water pouring through the ceiling from a plumbing mishap. The beer, which at that time was brewed on the premises (this was nearly 20 years ago), was a 5.5% Christmas special, and I'm pretty sure I deserved my three pints that day.

The beers, and usually the weather, are a little more pedestrian nowadays, and the microbrewery is long gone. I went for the house beer, called somewhat winsomely Wasd'ale, which is brewed now by Cumberland Brewery at Corby. I didn't take note of the others on my recent visit, though on previous visits they're all mostly local. The bar entrance suggests a small add-on to the large main hotel building, but it gets larger as you enter, and there are some large spaces out the back next to the beck which I would call a beer garden except that there's plenty of shelter in case it rains. I prefer the old fashioned room to the right on entering, or the even older small snug up a step or two to the left of the bar counter.

Iconic location and long been a "wanted to visit" destination.

Decent ales on - Yates Wasdale Head Gold was a rebranded Gold and went down fine.

Amusing signs detailing the lack of WiFi. Plenty to look at and explore.

Literally situated up a dead end at the top of Wast Water but it was still half full on Sunday lunch time when I visited. A former farmhouse, extended in the 1800s. The main entrance is to the hotel and is for residents only but to the right hand side is the entrance to Ritson’s, the public bar (named after the 19th Century landlord, Will Ritson) that opens at midday. There is one bar serving the main bar room and room off that, both with a slate floor, old wooden pews for seating and a side room with slightly softer covered seats. No fancy furnishings but a good place to visit nevertheless and in a great location. The Great Gable micro-brewery is based here http://www.greatgablebrewing.com/

On handpull there was Yate’s Cumbrian Ale, Great Gable, Yewbarrow Mild, Black Sheep. 4 more handpulls are used in summer when, I was told, the place gets really busy with walkers etc. The bar food menu is displayed on the board in the bar. Nothing fancy but you would still find something good enough for lunch.
