The dining room tables look less regimented than I recall, though I still prefer the "side-chapels" when I have the choice. There was no background music, which is always a bonus for me. The bar is still the handsome affair I described in my review of six years ago, but now sports eight hand pumps (one empty - see photos) with three from Jennings, plus Theakstons Old Peculier and three from Lake District micros. All the beers I tried were in excellent condition, though I have a gripe about the pricing: I paid £3.30 for a pint of Jennings Bitter, which is reasonable for the area, but in the evening when I came back I had two halves of Sneck Lifter and Old Peculier and was charged £4.35 - maybe it was happy hour before?

cant beat the place for location and it makes the most of it by having a spectacular beer garden.

Food was quick, good value and quality.

Ales were varied - with Castlerigg IPA and Thwaites Bitter in great condition.

The front part of the building is the hotel, with the bar being accessed from the car park on the left hand side. There is a large room with what I think of as side-chapels, as in a large church or cathedral. The bar itself is a magnificent example of the spindle-type and sports six hand pumps, with five ales available on my recent visit: Jennings Bitter, Sneck Lifter and Cumberland Ale, Hesket Newmarket Catbells and Keswick Thirst Blossom, all good local beers with a bit of variety to suit different tastes.

The tables are set out like a dining room, though not with the off-putting cruet sets, cutlery and menus that are seen too often in places that would rather you had something to eat than a drink. The pub has a slightly down-market feel to it, compared with the neighbouring Bridge Hotel, which is all to the good in my view. The Sneck Lifter at 5.1% and £3.30 a pint was slightly cheaper than the standard bitters just along the road, though still quite expensive even for the Lake District. It was quite quiet when I was here in early spring, but I expect those dining tables to be pretty full come summer, with cottages, hotel rooms and campsite all in and around the tiny village.
