Built in 1852 and refurbished in 1999, this pub sits in the largely awful tourist detention centre that is Bayswater's Queensway. I came here once before in 2006 so don't really remember it but I think that it has changed substantially in that time with a rather savage makeover that makes it look more like a cocktail bar. Minimal Victorian remnants (if any) have resulted in a pub with little décor, modern boarded floor, a muted Farrow & Ball colour scheme, filament bulbs, recessed ceiling downlighters, a dentilled cornice which is probably modern, slightly chunky furniture and some padded banquettes; the pub was also sporting all the ghastly Six Nations rubbish, so sport of some sort is obviously shown. There's apparently a roof terrace and upstairs bar/function room.
Ales: just Gloom Bore and Pride at a very steep £4.90 and as dull as is to be expected.
This isn't a great place, but it's heaven compared to the King's Head over the road.

This pub had two Caledonian ales on - Golden XPA and "Prince Alfred" (£4.10 a pint), a house ale which is in reality 80/-. Ciabatta sarnies are £7.25 a go, with just three to choose from (cajun chicken, steak, and cheese). They come with chips or soup. Main courses range from £7.95 for the chicken hamburger to £14.95 for the lamb shank.

The pub is fairly typical of the area, being a cornersite Victorian pub that's been completely modernised and opened up. The main bar as you enter has a few tall tables/tall stools in the middle of the room, but otherwise it's furnished with normal tables and chairs. It's bare-boarded of course, and the colour scheme is a mix of cream (ceilings) and dull purple (wainscotting, bar back, and some walls). There's not much on the walls - just a couple of fancy prints by the windows, and adverts for the daily specials and live music on Thursdays and Sundays. Some additional seating is in another room down a step or two to the left and rear of the servery. This seems something of an overflow room, as it's even more basic and characterless than the main room, with just some ordinary tables and chairs, and is where the one-armed bandits are sited. The whole place was brightened up a bit by the Christmas tree and coal effect fire at each end of the main room.

Overall this is a fairly average pub, but which I guess meets the needs of the largely transient clientele of the area.

Beers from courage and smith's. Food served and advertising live music. Didn't venture upstairs to the roof terrace.
