I initially though that the road up to the Haven Arms was a country lane and that I was going to find myself walking along a verge with speeding cars going past, but thankfully the approach is more like a long driveway. It’s in a nice secluded location alongside Burstwick Drain (which is more like a river), a short walk from Hedon high street. Inside the pub there is seating in the front windows either side of the central entrance and in the left rear corner are a pool table and dartboard. There is a door at the rear that leads to a flat roof with a chair, but the lack of any railing and an electrical wire hanging across the door suggests this area is solely for the use of the owners. I didn’t see any live sports advertisements, but there was a televisions that was supplying some background music via an 80s music channel. The toilets are found through a door to the left and further left is a dilapidated and unusable rear garden. To be honest there’s plenty of seating out front so this rear area isn’t really needed. The serving counter is on the right-hand wall where 12 fonts run across the white tiled back bar. Seven were in operation drawing premium lagers, Guinness and a couple of ciders. There are also three hand pumps, all badged with TT Landlord. In the right rear corner is a makeshift office where the owner was sitting just out of sight, so I stood at the bar for a while not knowing that I was meant to press the bell for service. He was friendly enough when he came over, but I found the pub to be messy and certainly not a comfortable place to sit with a pint.

The Haven Arms is located down a country lane away from the village of Hedon. As the previous reviewer has stated, it's in a fairly dilapidated state.
First impressions were not good. Cars in the car park appear to have been dumped, whilst very loud dance music was being pumped out of speakers in the bar. A small group of teenagers, possibly not old enough to drink were sat outside.
We walked into the bar to what seemed more like a building site than a pub. There were no handpulls, but we were told that real ales were available in the lounge. We gladly moved away from the mess of a bar to the lounge, but still no real ale was visible. Handpulls have been removed from all rooms now, although Black Sheep & Landlord were listed on the walls. I suspect these were bottles.
At £7+ for a gin and a soft drink, prices here are also extortionate. We'd planned to eat here, but there was only one other couple present when we arrived and we soon decided to avoid it. Another couple arrived for food, having booked a table. They wandered in and looked completely bewildered by the experience.
There appears to be new owners here. But they'll require one hell of a lot of work to get this place anywhere near respectable.

There is a look about this place that speaks of neglect, or at the very least a lack of care about appearances. The original pub building, dated 1825, looks well enough, though the front door is no longer used and entrance is via a doorway shared with the modern extension to the right. Once into the bar, which has been opened out from what must have been at least two rooms originally, there was an air of shabby neglect, with half of the wooden floor tiles missing and a smell of either solvent or fuel oil heavy on the nose. There were chaotic scenes behind the bar, with someone in the cellar shouting up to the servers about the lack of lager to one of the fonts. My half of hand pulled real ale was served with a distracted demeanour and the beer itself was beyond care. I went outside to drink it, though it wasn't the warmest of late April days, and although I drank the beer, I had to subsequently go to another pub nearby for something else to take away the taste (not sour, just stale and oxidised). This could be a really nice pub in the right hands, but I'm not convinced that the present proprietors know what they are doing.
