Pub SignMan left this review about The Western Front

This is a small, single room pub on the eastern side of the busy Churchill Square. The interior isn’t the most inspiring, with scuffed wooden floorboards and walls painted in pastel shades, but there is a decent amount of seating for a pub of its size, mostly standard chairs and benches around tables of varying sizes. A few small pillars combine with the furniture to make it a bit awkward to navigate your way to the back of the room, but the servery is in the front left corner, so this is only really a problem if you need the toilet. Folding doors and windows at the front of the pub open out onto the outdoor seating space which has several long, sturdy benches which allow for good people watching across the Square. There is an upstairs room which may or may not be permanently open, but it was hosting a vintage clothing sale during our visit, which attracted some of Brighton’s more bohemian residents. An interesting and eclectic soundtrack played throughout our stay, but we spent most of our time soaking up the sun outside, so only caught snatches of it.
Two ales – King Brighton Best and Butcombe Gold – were on handpull alongside Weston’s Old Rosie. I gave the Butcombe a try and despite the annoying hipster barman initially serving me a completely empty pint glass, I eventually ended up with a well kept, refreshing pint of ale.
I didn’t think much of this place, although the provision of two real ales has to be seen as improvement from the time of the previous reviews. I found it useful as a meeting point and for a quick pint in the sun, but I doubt that I’d make a return.

Small downstairs bar with more room upstairs which is probably used for music. Has the air of a short term bar just trying to make some quick money. Handpump was off apart from old rosie. Spotted a bottle of Old Peculier but ir was served far too cold and priced at £4:10

Steve C left this review about The Western Front

The Western Front is a single room bar with some seating out the front that is covered by an awning. Like most of the establishments in this part of town this place is geared towards students who get 20% off deals. Advertised as a pub and kitchen, food is served from 11:30 until 20:00 Monday until Saturday and from midday until 18:00 on Sundays. My visit was late so the kitchen was shut and menus long gone, but the daily special came in at £8. Alongside the lager the bar supports a couple of hand pumps that were drawing Brighton Best and Old Rosie cider.

The service was friendly and although vey quiet I enjoyed my visit. I’m not sure that I would like this place as much on a busy weekend night, but this is the case with all of the pubs and bars in this part of Brighton.
