Dating back to 1631 when it was the Royal Mail and rebuilt in its current form in 1879, once a branch of Grand Union and since 2013, a bar and restaurant called Hoxley & Porter.
Out front there's a very attractive bow window. You enter via a glass-walled corridor which runs a substantial length of the pub, opening out into a rather trendy and tastefully appointed though gloomy venue with a bar to the right side. The front is reserved for dining but the rear tables are for drinkers. There's a projector screen above the doors to the lavs which open directly into the bar area. Switzerland were ensuring that Brazil wasn't going to have it all its own way, of the few customers, I was the only one watching and this sort of entertainment does seem a bit incongruous in a place like this.
There was no real ale of course so I plumped for a half of the Lagunitas IPA which came in at a staggering £3.30 a half - pro rata, I think this is the most expensive beer I've ever purchased in Britain so there's no chance of a return visit.

Another dimly lit pub with no real ale worth mentioning. Would not return.

Steve C left this review about Grand Union

This is a dimly lit long and thin bar with indifferent staff and a standard draught selection alongside Peroni. My Guinness was good, but it took an age to be served even though I was the only person standing at the bar on a quiet weeknight visit. There is a strange tunnel leading from the entrance to halfway up the pub which had some velvet rope used by bouncers to form queues so I'd imagine this place gets busy at the weekend when there must be music and a late license.

There is a projector screen that was rolled up on the back wall during my visit, but I can't imagine this place showing any sport.

These Grand Union chain pubs are starting to pop up everywhere now and every time they do it is a sign that a proper pub has just died.
