A long day crawling and we left the Spoons for the end so we could eat cheap grub and slob out. This masterplan turned out to be a bit of mistake as this is the only JDW in town, opposite the bus terminus, and despite being a big attractive Jacobean styled folly of a building is actually fairly limited when it comes to capacity; so much so that we had to join a queue and realise that we were destined to be amongst the oldest in the pub. Capacity was reached and it was a one-group-out one-group-in policy, but the bouncers (who also searched bags – I assume trouble must be known here) were efficient and almost apologetic when they clapped eyes on us two jolly not-quite-middle-aged-ale-drinking wallies. Warren-like inside and almost felt like a proper pub. Unusually for a Spoons, there was also a pleasant and sizeable side patio. Two guest ales from Green Jack and I gave the LGM1 (NBSS 3) a whirl with my curry. From our seats we took much amusement from watching the daughter of Alice Nutter from Chumbawumba keep up with serving hundreds of shots of highlighter pen-coloured liquids that were coming in via the Spoons app on a big screen. On the one hand it was a horror, but on the other it was Saturday night in the only Spoons in the largest conurbation in Suffolk. Timbo desperately needs to find another outlet here.
Visited early August.

Second stop of the day in Ipswich and the second worst pub of the day. All of the Wetherspoon's I have visited since lockdown has been lifted have been poor, but this was worst of the lot.

After a 10-minute wait to be shown to a table, I had a go at ordering online. As usual, the app got me as far as the payment screen, before taking me to a blank screen. The waiter invited me to scan a QR code, which also failed. At least I did discover from the app that the Abbot was unavailable. In fact, it appeared that only Ruddles Best was available. Doom Bar was also showing on the app, but staff were not offering it when asked. I don't ever recall visiting a Wetherspoon's with only a single real ale. There was no real cider either.

The outdoor area does have plenty of seating, some undercover and some in the early afternoon sunshine. Tables undercover were being kept for diners.

Wifi is normally handy in Wetherspoon's branches, but the wifi did not stretch to outdoor tables here.

An impressive looking building, conveniently just across the road from Tower Ramparts bus station. Inside there is a central bar, nicely breaking up a series of separate drinking areas, with the main tabled eating area to the rear. Outside there is a fair-sized patio, including a section with artificial grass. Beerwise, I was pleased to see a stout, a porter and an old ale on pump, together with a varied range of bitters as well as the usual stuff. Ciders from the box. No complaints with ale condition; service was patchy but otherwise a slightly above average 'Spoon's.
