Well, well, well. I called in here about 2 years ago and at the time it became obvious it was competing with the local Spoons, resulting in a rather stereotypical client base. I called in today and noticed just three hand pumps at the bar (down from I think six on my previous visit) offering just Marstons EPA and Hobgoblin, with the third pump unclipped. This was not enough to tempt me to stay so I did an about turn. The fact that the barmaid was sat on the front step smoking a fag bought me enough time to make a hasty retreat.

Old Boots left this review about The Old Library Wine Bar

Housed in an impressive neo-gothic style building that was once the Mechanics Institute. The ground floor has a L shaped counter along one side with a raised area opposite and at the back is a mezzanine floor, beneath that is another sitting area in an open basement. Six pumps serve beers from local micros in great condition. The interior is surprisingly modern and a bit bland considering the exterior, some old features remain however. The walls are tongue and groove with geometric wallpaper above, seating a good mix of bench and tables and chairs, there are some interesting framed beer ad's and photos of drinkers as decoration. The modern barback is quite impressive as was the solitary barmaid who coped admirably with the crowds watching football on the array of big screens.
