Friendly village pub in Bridens Camp just to the north of Hemel Hempstead.

The pub has 3 small rooms, with low beams. We arrived towards the end of the lunchtime weekday session, shortly before it closed for the afternoon. Most customers had just finished their lunches. The menu listed on a blackboard did look quite tempting.

Greene King IPA & Abbot can be found on handpumps to the side of the bar, whilst 3 guest beers were on handpulls on the front of the bar. These were Thornbridge Brother Rabbit, Vale Brill Gold & Tring Nose Bag. Our group of 3 tried one of each. They no longer serve a real cider.

There are outdoor seating areas to the side of the pub, along with a car park and garden to the rear. The car park is approached via a rutted lane.

A small country drinking pub. The bars get a little crowded, but there is no problem in getting served.
There seems to be a prevailing smell of air fresheners from the lavvies, which is slightly off putting.
The food is ok, served on relatively small plates which are topped-up with chips.
As to the beer, Abbot and GK IPA with four guest ales and a cider, Hedge Layer on my visit. I had a couple of pints of Adnams Broadside. It was good, but I have had better.

A small free house in secluded countryside with a few cottages as neighbours and situated opposite a cricket pitch.Immediately ahead of the low front door is an island bar with 5 handpumps at the front and another two to the right hand side. This is where the GK IPA and Abbott lurk,so no great loss if you dont spot them, these pumps were rarely used on my trip. From the main 5,there was a real cider as well as St Austell Tribute ,Tring Percy's Toppler,Adnams Yuletide, and a well kept Vale Waes Hael at £3.20pp.
The pub interior is small with low ceilings and substantial beams around the bar, with a friendly warning for me by the jocular locals. To the left is a carpeted area , a small coal burning range with copper kettles on the top and a blackboard above describing the daily food specials at between £9-£12.To the right are two small rooms divided by a brick chimney breast ,this fire not being lit.The furniture is more kitchen pine rather than rustic, and the menus on each table indicate that a lot of punters come here to eat, from a pub grub menu with a small premium pricing policy given the location. However my £5 jacket potato was very good.
Besides car borne diners, this pub will appeal to walkers in the surrounding Green Belt and good support is also given by locals who gather around the serving area and act as very good bar blockers, annoying but unavoidable given the lack of space.
Outside there are bench seating, some under an awning, while at the rear is an attractive garden with views over the immediate countryside. There is an outside loo for external drinkers. The exterior also includes a couple of small barns and a terrace of three cottages down the lane to the car park.
Quite rightly this pub features in the GBG 2012 and I liked their support of the Locale initiative, the inclusion of two GK beers seemed superfluous.A good spot for some real ale and a meal in a rural location yet still reasonably close to the metropolis that is Hemel Hempsted.
