The pub is divided into three cosy, walk through rooms, the layout hinting at its 16th century origins. There is a central, curved bar that services two of the areas with two sets of two handpumps either side, these were offering up three ales between them, London Pride, Doom Bar and Youngs Bitter. Nice little pub but an unimaginative beer choice makes a return unlikely.

Dropped in here early Saturday evening, for the first time in years. The pub still retains the character Rex has described below, and felt warm and comfortable, with a good mix of about 25 customers present, about 8 of whom were at the large central bar and the remainder at the tables to the front and either side. There is also a function room to the rear, where the advertised monthly comedy nights are presumably hosted.

Four ale pumps were serving Timothy Taylor’s Golden Best (@£3.25), Pride (@£3.30), Young’s London Gold and Doombar, and my pints went down well. A selection of pub grub main meals is available at £5 a go during the week, there were some fish specials at £7.50, curry nights are held on Tuesdays at £6 for your choice of curry with rice and a naan, and Sunday roasts including pudding come in at £10. I haven’t eaten here yet, but it seems extremely good value for the area. The sole barman/waiter who was on was kept busy, but was friendly and efficient and obviously on top of the job.

This struck me as a decent place, which unlike many others is still trying to be a proper local pub offering value to its customers. I’ll certainly be back when I get an opportunity.

This looks like an old pub that has been modernised, but not to the extent that it has been ruined. There is a small conservatory area that has been added at some stage, rather unusually at the front of the pub. This area is very light, as is usual with conservatories, and is a pleasant spot to sit and read a book with a pint at hand. The rest of the pub is low-ceilinged, with dark beams, giving it the feel and appearance of a country pub, which I suppose is what it was in years past. The front bar area has false modern replica boarding, but a small room to the left has parquet flooring, and four tables and chairs. There is some interesting bric-a-brac on show – some old Singer sewing machines; a relief of the Eddystone Lighthouse; and a Bristol Shipping Company clock that is supposed to show the time in London, New York and Victoria. Although the exterior of the pub looks quite modern, the interior has retained a lot of character and charm (although personally I wouldn’t have painted the front of the bar counter dark charcoal, but that’s just my opinion!).
The ales on were London Pride and Young’s Bitter. There was a pump clipped with Doom Bar, but unfortunately it wasn’t on, and a fourth pump was unused. This is a comfortable and well run pub by all appearances, and I would be very happy to drop in for another pint if the opportunity arises.
