Backstreet CAMRA pub for which I was expecting great things. Inside is a gentle middle-aged vibe; no music, just gabbing. Rambling layout, two rooms either side of the bar via a side corridor. Front bar is a classic mid 70s feel with swirly artex walls, basic carpet and third length tongue and groove wood panelling which looks pretty new. Servery has a wood structure that I assume is a COVID leftover, presumably was a perspex snob screen two years ago. The rear room is darker and more of a locals lair. Confusing on the cask front, the main front bar has two pumps labelled with GK Abbot and Elgoods Black Dog. I cheerily went for a pint of the latter (NBSS 3) but on exploring the back room there were three more options (Moongazer, Woodfordes and Green Jack) - so why not say so at the entrance? If there was a board of some sort I missed it and I was hardly blotto (I also can't see it in the photo I took of the front bar...). I also noted a couple of randomly mounted beer engines in the corridor as well; whether they were for show or not, I couldn’t say. Noted as the local CAMRA branch’s cider POTY so I guess there is enough apple-catching here to keep the toothless happy. I liked the place but I did think it a bit peculiar; the conversation about the merits of almond milk made me smile at least.

This was the best traditional ale pub I visited in Kings Lynn, just a bit of a shame that it’s a bit of a walk south of the town centre.
Internally it still has the original two room format with a front public bar of two sections either side of the central bar that you enter into and then a smaller lounge bar at the back that you can see on the other side of the central servery and is accessed via a corridor via the toilets to the right of the bar.
The public bar you enter into has a couple of handpumps, however this pub regularly has five ales on, one of which is usually a mild. But this point could be easily missed as the other pumps are in the lounge bar at the back, and although there is a chalk board in the public bar listing what is on, it is actually on the wall behind you when you are in the public bar staring at the pumps you can see.
For my visit Mighty Oak Oscar Wilde was the mild and alongside GK Abbot there were three local ales with Nelsons Revenge and Royal Norfolk from Woodforde and Pintail from Moongazer. There were also five ciders, also detailed on a chalk board and the Live and Let Live has been the local CAMRA branch cider pub of the year for the last four years.
