Has been subjected to the ‘rustic treatment’ of plank wood being glued everywhere and the stripping-out of the last vestiges of cosiness. A scarcely credible six pumps with five ales on; 3x GK (IPA, Abbot, Yardbird) plus two guests in St Austell Tribute and Butcombe Original. My Yard was surprisingly serviceable (NBSS 2.5) as I tried to ignore the looming and booming TV overhead that no bugger was watching. Ahh, Les. It’s only after you left that I realised what a good pub you ran!

Update – popped in over Xmas and had pretty good pints of Wadworth Swordfish and GK Abbot Reserve. General pub description similar to my 2010 review. Probably the best visit here for 10 years! Worth a look I think. Rated 6.5
October 2010
Spent a few good hours in here in the mid-90’s when it was run by Les. However when he retired it got snapped-up by Greene King and became a Hungry Horse which was appalling and lost most of the custom, bar the odd podgy Porty and their spud-faced nippers eating mega plates of chips and deep-fried grease. However it has now been refitted in the classic upmarket Greene King style (cream and chocolate) and seems to be more of a pub/lounge bar effort. The rotten window frames have gone, and there's some cleaner tables and comfy seats. The vibe is more warm and relaxed, though still quite quiet. So onto the beer, what's new? Usually two Greene King handpulls with an occasional guest beer, generally in decent nick. There’s also a proper cider too (Westons, I think). On a summer's day, the outside patio is a decent place to quaff your pint. The Albion is worth visiting again for the first time in years, but it has a long way to go to make up the ground it has lost in Portishead. Rated 6

A large, recently refurbished pub which I understand re-opened just a few weeks ago. It’s a pleasant enough place, but in a somewhat bland, corporate, mass produced sort of way and is no doubt indistinguishable from numerous other GK pubs up and down the country. It will no doubt appeal to the many local families in Portishead, but whether the discerning drinker will make a beeline for it is another matter.
It’s divided in to several different areas, with various different decor styles. Much of the pub is carpeted, but there are tiles around the bar and one of the rooms at the rear which is up a couple of steps has a wooden floor. Walls are a mixture of exposed stone work and various shades of paintwork – I spotted maroon, cream and “gastro-pub” brown. There was a scattering of small colour photos, and a partition made out of glass fronted racking full of wine bottles.
Beers on tap were a slightly disappointing Abbott Reserve and Greene King IPA. My drinking companion was singularly unimpressed and queried if that was all they had. The barmaid looked somewhat perplexed and replied “Errr, ales? Errr, yeah”. He decided to opt for a Guinness. Ciders were somewhat better represented with Blackthorn, Thatcher’s Gold and Stowford Press, as well as a hot mulled one.

They keep reinventing this place. The Hungry Horse days have gone leaving us with a recognisable Greene King pub/ eatery.Usually a couple of ales on tap.Flat medium sized car park and good access, though the interior can be cluttered with diners who stretch their space.Otherwise not to bad for wheelchairs.
