Much as described by Blackthorn below. It’s a friendly country pub with long opening hours, B&B and good restaurant food. There is a large car park at the front and a smaller one behind for B&B guests. The ales on were Doombar and Butcombe Original both in good condition. There was a craft ale on Brixton Reliance, and a bank of taps dispensing ciders from Mortimer’s Orchard and Stowford Press, plus Moretti, Heineken, Guinness and Amstel. There didn’t seem to be any locals in, but it was popular with people dining and a few people working in the area. Worth dropping in for a meal or a few beers, and I’d be happy to try the B&B.

An attractive country pub located slightly off the beaten track but nonetheless only a couple of minute drive from the A37, it’s was at one time a row of miner’s cottages that have been knocked together, and has always been one of my favourite pubs ever since I first started visiting them.
It’s quite cosy and traditional inside, with a number of different rooms. The main bar counter is at the front of the pub, and this is a relatively narrow room with exposed stone walling. To the left is a pleasant seating area with a large stone fireplace, a wood burning stove and piles of logs stacked up ready for the cold weather. Some type of wooden boards were on the floor and down a couple of steps at the rear was a cosy old snug with more exposed stonework and unusual mirrored “windows” complete with wooden shutters, although the large TV screen on the wall seemed a little out of place. Fortunately, this was not in use on our visit. Elsewhere the décor consisted of dark wooden panelling on the lower part of the walls with cream painted wallpaper above. A number of small generic watercolours of country scenes were dotted around the walls. A further dining room was signposted to the left, although from memory there is also a larger restaurant area off to the right, and food is indeed something of a focus here, although this was not at all noticeable in the bar area.
Beers on tap were Doom Bar, Butcombe Original and Butcombe’s seasonal Chris Moose, whilst the ciders were Stowford Press, Mortimer’s Orchard and a hot mulled option.
