A good sized, street corner pub, this was renovated and changed it’s name a few years back and has now established itself as a well-respected community local compared to the rather run down appearance and chequered history that it had previously. Initially after it’s renovation there was a restaurant upstairs, although this now appears to be run as more of a separate venue with it’s own entrance around the corner. Whether or not food is offered in the pub I’m not sure, although there was a selection of sausage rolls and jars of nuts on the end of the bar.

Internally it consists three rooms, two of which share a bar counter. The central room has quite a homely appearance, almost like someone’s living room with shelves of books, parquet wood flooring and well-worn arm chairs clustered around a fire-place. A couple of beer barrels were strategically arranged for vertical drinking and there were also some giant plant pots. A further room off to the right was a good size and this led on to a small courtyard. A small stage area was up at one end complete with both a piano and organ, so presumably live music is hosted on occasions. This too had wood strip on the floor, an old brick fire-place, old dresser and a collection of soda siphons on the window sill. Very dark wood panelling was on the lower part of the walls with floral wallpaper above, as well as a few pictures dotted around.

Beers on tap were Loddon Hullaballoo and Greene King London Glory, although two other pumps appeared to have run out so there may on occasions be more. A good selection of beer mats tacked to the walls suggested that there was a frequently changing choice. The cider on tap was Stowford Press whilst four boxes from Weston’s were stacked up on the end of the bar – Rosie’s Pig, Family Reserve, Dry and Country Perry.

Awesome pub! Had the most amazing sausages, and I know a good sausage! Some of the best food I had during my trip to Bristol. Really cool atmosphere and some great cider. Stayed until last orders. First stop when I'm back in Brizzol!

Previously a beaten old dump called the Cumberland, this place has now been thoroughly scrubbed and remodelled as a gastropub (I never thought I'd see the day when Totterdown had or needed a gastro, but there you go). It's actually not a bad effort, though the 'distressed' furniture is stupidly pretentious really, some of it looks skeletal. Otherwise it's a fair if uninspiring place to have a drink; ale-wise, there were a couple of good choices, my Bath Gem was served well enough. The food sounded interesting.

Worth dropping if by you've taken a walk through the park opposite.
