The exterior of the pub has recently been repainted and now looks more presentable, with a black and white frontage along with a black and gold pub sign. The interior is traditional, apart from the whopping large plasma TV, which takes up the majority of the far wall. The three arched casement windows, were original and made a decent feature, along with a decent choice of locales. The couple of pals I was with manned up and went for the Coastal Brewery ales at 7%, were I was a wuss and settled on the Cheddar Crown & Glory at 4.5%. The pub had a good atmosphere and the locals were friendly and inviting.

It must have been a small bank in it's day,the bar room is oblong with three flatscreen mounted on the far wall with Sky Sports. The serving area is at the rear left, while two darts boards are mounted nearby, one with it's own alcove.Furniture is mainly in pine with leather chairs along each wall, with some upturned barrels near the bar for vertical drinkers to rest their pints.
Out the back ,there is a large covered terrace with benches and wicker furniture. It's a real boozer with a community feel, and a band was setting up on my Saturday evening visit.
The 6 handpumps were drawing Coastal Brewery Western Porter and Agnus (both a pokey 7% and in good nick),alongside Cheddar Crown & Glory (decent) with a few clips turned. There is a policy here to stock local brewers output. It deserves its GBG listing ,I liked the lively blokey atmosphere and would happily return to what appeared from my mini crawl to be the best pub for ale in Keynsham.

One of only a couple of pub’s left on Keynsham’s High Street, the pub seems to have a bit of a split personality in that there were a number of unusual beers chalked up on a board above the bar which usually indicates a certain type of establishment and clientele, but on the other hand it was populated entirely by youf’s wearing baseball caps and the music was a tad too loud for my liking.

It’s a single room pub which has a slightly tired, down at heel appearance. The flooring is a mixture of parquet wood and some type of screed, whilst the walls are predominantly cream plasterwork with maroon paint on the lower third. A few black and white pictures were on the wall, but other than this there was little else of any note. A wood burning stove was built in to a recess at the far end with a stainless steel chimney above it, although this was partially obscured by a projector screen. An LCD TV was also up in the corner, although neither of these were in use. A blackboard menu offered a number of pub grub staples such as Ham, Egg & Chips, lasagne, Scampi, Battered Cod, etc., and these were all priced at £5.

Beers on tap were RCH Old Slug, Otter Ale and Wife’s Bitter from Plain Ales. There were however another four pumps on the bar and the board advertised Salisbury Classic Gold and the 8.3% Raging Bitch IPA so presumably these had recently run out. A number of bottled beers were also listed. Ciders meanwhile were Thatcher’s Gold and Thatcher’s Dry.
