2023 update: Still a popular and busy hotel/bar/restaurant on the sea front of the village. There’s a front lounge, a back bar and a restaurant front left and rear right, the lounge and bar are serviced by a single L shaped servery. Three handpumps now in the lounge plus two triples of keg delights, there are two unused pulls in the bar plus a triple keg dispenser, it has darts but is a rather plain and no frills drinking den.

One of three bars in the large touristy village, it offers accommodation, plus food and drink in four separate rooms, as well as a harbour-side outdoor seating area flanked by the hotel’s trademark palm trees. Entering from the black painted exterior there is a small “snug” or dining room to the left and the main bar to the right, at the back of the main bar is another larger dining room and reached by a short corridor (or external entrance) a proper public bar with screen for showing sports. The main bar has a tartan carpet, exposed stone work with coins cemented into it and is laid out exclusively for dining, each table usually has a reserved sign on it but the staff will allow drinks-only customers to sit at a table whilst not required. One gets the feeling drinkers are expected to frequent the public bar only, the till is located there for cash sales and diners of course will pay by plastic, expect to be relieved of about £60 plus drinks for a meal for two. There are two handpumps in each bar with well kept beers from Houston. It’s mainly a tourist spot but there’s a board of village notices and the back bar gets its share of proper locals.

The Plockton Hotel feels much more like a pub that a hotel/restaurant. We arrived into the cosy front bar to find a group of lads watching the England rugby game and an elderly lady with an iPad or similar.

Unfortunately, there was nobody to serve us. The rest of my party went to the toilet whilst waiting for somebody to serve. They returned and I decided to do the same, coming to the decision that if nobody had appeared by the time I returned to the bar, we would depart.

Luckily, the barmaid did appear in time and we could choose between Orkney Island Life or Cromarty Happy Chappy. Despite being far from happy, I went for the Cromarty beer, which was consumed whilst perusing the oddity that is rarely found nowadays - a local CAMRA magazine.

Not a bad pub, but could be so much better with more attentive staff.

The two pubs in Plockton are easily confused, with one being Plockton Inn and this one being Plockton Hotel. While both are clearly hotels and restaurants first, this one is slightly more pub-like, with a beer (and gin) festival in May and an outdoor drinking area with outstanding views across the harbour. There were three hand pumps at the time of my visit, with two beers from Swannay (I didn't note the other one), one a best bitter at a lowish 3.6%, the other a beast of a beer called Muckle IPA at a monsterous 6.6%, but both being sold at £4 a pint. (Three thirds are available at the same price per pint, as were my two halves.) I warmed to this pub a little more than on my visit four years ago, possibly under the influence of alcohol, but I think it deserves a six rather than my previous rather mean five.
