A former winner of the local Camra’s Pub of the Year award, I had high expectations of my visit here, but it would seem that the passage of time as well as changes in management have taken their toll, and whilst in certainly wasn’t at all unpleasant, I can’t really see it getting an award these days.
It’s quite cosy inside, with several interconnected rooms making it feel smaller than is actually the case, and I’m not even sure that I fully explored it. Décor wise it’s quite traditional, with red patterned carpet on the floors, exposed stone walling and plenty of old beams on the ceiling, many of which were adorned with a large collection of pottery jugs, as well as horse brasses and such like. Large stone fireplaces with a wood burning stove were in most rooms, and a number of old Hobgoblin adverts were dotted around the walls, as well as a much more contemporary illuminated Guinness sign. All the tables were laid up for food, including placemats, cutlery and serviettes.
Beers on tap were Doom Bar and 6X, whilst a third pump appeared unused. Ciders meanwhile were Weston’s Old Rosie, along with Gold and Haze from Thatcher’s. Overall, not a bad pub by any means but I felt the focus on dining made is slightly less than welcoming for those who just wanted a pint.

A roadside pub with a large car park, this is a former local Camra pub of the year. Entering from the car park there's a small area of seats and tables around a large fireplace, but the main part of the pub is at a slightly higher level. Space generally seems a bit limited by the cluttered layout of the tables, so that it almost feels like a struggle to get to the bar even when there's only a handful of customers.
The bar, quite a long way back, it seems, with another room behind (blocked off at the time of my visit, probably because it was quiet) has four hand pumps, with Otter Bitter, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Old Rosie cider and, at the time of my visit, Caledonian Poltergeist Porter. A large number of former pump clips adorn the walls, along with some old Adnams brewery adverts. The bar itself was festooned with lights fashioned to look like red berries - is it Christmas? There was some background music that stayed firmly in the background, and this made quite a pleasant short stop for me on my cycle ride to Bristol.
