Beer was good - I had a perfect Stewarts Edinburgh Gold. Unlike quite a few pubs in the City, this allows families in for food - so rather packed with kids eating at 9pm on a weekday. I would like this if with my family, less so when out for a pint.

Great terrace down the metal stairs overlooking West Bow.

Decent enough pub.

The Castle Arms is a fairly standard tourist trap Edinburgh pub which doesn’t have to try too hard due to its tourist central location, so it doesn’t. Pleasant but run of the mill décor, average food and beer offerings and fairly inept Eastern European bar staff. But the one thing that makes it worth a visit is its location near the upper end of Johnston Terrace which offers superb views up to the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle from the front of the pub. And then if you move through the pub, past the bar to the bar area at the back, there is an exit out onto the small outside terrace which provides stunning high level views over West Bow and down to the Grassmarket.
For the record there are four Ale handpumps on the bar but two of them were off and the others had the very uninspiring Caledonian Flying Scotsman and Deuchars IPA. But frankly I would see if you can get a free seat on the outside terrace first, then buy a half of something and make it last as long as humanly possible whilst soaking up the views below.
