This small pub retains the majority of its fixtures and fittings from the 1899 refit by John Forrester. The only fixture that has gone was a couple of snugs at the rear. Again the ceilings and the multi coloured tiled dado along with small pictorial panels of rural Scottish scenes are outstanding.
The bar area was low slung and finished in mahogany. Four handpumps with three ales and one cider, the beer line up was Broughton Royal Mile IPA, Stewart 80 and Orkney Tidal Bay.

Another fine interior and another CAMRA heritage pub (National level) in this special city for eye candy. L shaped inside with an intricate wood bar back featuring inset mirrors. There’s also impressive third length wall tiling and a fabulous moulded ceiling. Cream and green are the major colours on display, accentuated by a range of jumbo brewery mirrors. Four cask from Scottish breweries; sadly my Orkney Northern Light was warm, flabby and very slightly phenol (NBSS 1.5). ‘Nice pub, shame about the beer…’

A good sized, L-shaped pub, it was surprisingly busy on a recent cold and wet mid-week evening, although it had thinned out considerably by about 8:00pm, so perhaps it’s the sort of place where people pop in for a couple of drinks after work.

In some ways it’s rather difficult to describe the interior as it was really very dark in there, with the majority of the lighting coming from candles on all the tables and window sills, supplemented by a few meagre globe lamps. From what I could make out, it was quite ornate and elaborate with a panelled ceiling having dark green painted inlays and gold cornice work around the edge. Some attractive and colourful tiling covered the lower half of much of the walls, and there were a couple of old fireplaces at the rear, although rather than a real fire they just contained more candles. Some very large brewery mirrors covered the remainder of the wall space, and there were dark wooden boards on the floor. Full height windows at the front and further glazing to the side must create a quite different atmosphere during daylight hours.

The menu looked to offer a fairly concise selection of pub grub dishes, such as steak & ale pie, fish & chips, burger and so on, although that said the prices were somewhat above your normal pub prices, with the main courses ranging from anywhere around a tenner right up to £25, with even the steak & ale pie coming in at £16. My Truffle mac’n’cheese was a pretty decent dish and a generous portion and came with some very tasty garlic bread and a decent side salad.

Beers on tap were Stewart’s 80/-, Born in the Borders’ Foxy Blonde and Game Bird and their own Baroney Ale. Cider choice was a pretty decent Rosie’s Pig and Orchard Thieves which is far better than the usual dross that you seem to get around these parts. Overall I thought this was a decent enough pub, although it does seem to be quite focused around the food more so than somewhere to pop in for a casual pint.
