A real ale haven in the Scottish borders, the friendly (English) landlady was regaling us with talk of their first annual beer festival, five months after the event. There are five hand pumps on the bar in the basic front room, only three being in action at the time of our visit. We went for Belhaven St Andrews, a rather strong malty brew which unfortunately had a bit of an off flavour of diacetyl - not perhaps complainably off, but probably more butterscotchy than the brewer intended. The others were Hadrian and the Borders Tyneside Blonde and Tempest Cascadian Blonde. The bar itself was a smart wooden affair, and the room was comfortable, and if I found myself living in Duns, for whatever reason, I'd consider this pub one of the upsides of an otherwise rather traumatic transformation.
