Sat atop a hill and catches the light rather magnificently. Quite a grand looking building, with a sculpted garden at the front. A traditional, comfy L interior with multi-coloured pub carpet, blue fabric seating and nicotine coloured painted embossed wallpaper. Mainly foodie but no issue with drinking once you've answered the obligatory dining question at the bar. Three pumps with two marked on the blackboard but just one actually operational - Fyne Ales Jarl - which was in excellent shape despite the less than-modern-glassware, a rather pitted pint stamp glass, which seemed incongruous given the effort made elsewhere – chuck it out! Roger's wallet wobbler tale below was repeated here, a pint and a can of Irn Bru came out at a faintly ludicrous £7.20. Gets a lot of POTY awards from the local CAMRA branch but I guess that maybe reflects a paucity of genuine competition. It's fine here but not necessarily worth the 8 quid for the bus ticket out of Aberdeen for a special visit, to be honest.

The interior of the pub is traditional and 'English' with geraniums in the window boxes. It is burgundy and cream in colour. It is rather dark in here.

I found the pub comfortable. The food was very tasty; I had the Ploughmans, the others in the group had tuna sandwiches and prawn sandwiches. We arrived just as the kitchen closed, and they were still happy to serve us.

The beer was the usual with three real ales, Brew Dog Trashy Blonde (awful - well kept, but just not to my taste) and Inveralmond Independence and Thrappledouser, both delicious.

I would recommend this highly.

Just off the village centre, the Redgarth (which translates as Red House in the Garden) is a cosy country pub that was initially built as a private residence in 1929 but was converted initially to a cocktail bar in 1961 before becoming the pub as we know it. It is a Good Beer Guide regular, carries a good local reputation and with it, an air of expectation although it didn’t really fully live up to it for me.

The visitor is initially greeted by a well tended and attractive beer garden with hedgerows and a small wooden gazebo. The L shaped interior is equally pleasant without having any great character or feature The standard pub type décor and furnishings include some old local pictures neatly arranged, a few nick knacks around high shelves and a couple of bay window sections. The pub does appear to lean more towards the dining end of the market with several tables in the bar being “reserved” on our visit. The food is more restaurant than snacks or pub grub with main courses in the region of £10/20.

The 3 ales available were Theakston Lightfoot, Inveralmond Independence and Houston Peter’s Well, very good quality as I would have expected but something wasn’t cheap as a pint of Independence & a coffee for Mrs B clocked up a staggering £5.65!

The current owner has been there for over 20 years so you can expect there to be a loyal customer base and an element of stability about the place. They also do B&B accommodation (3 rooms) and there is a decent size car park. Whilst it was a good notch above many of its competitors in the area, it just felt a bit too sanitised and faceless and is really a place more geared for a peaceful evening meal than a lengthy beer session.
