Standing opposite the church, the Goat has clearly had ambitions towards being a grand hotel, but this is a small town and the nearest it got to grandeur was a small portico, and now the outside paint job was looking a little cracked and dusty. Once inside though this is a very attractive and welcoming pub with several rooms, interconnected by rounded archways, around a small central bar. I was pleased to see Stonehouse Station Bitter on the bar (the other beer was Three Tuns Solstice) and it was as good as I remember it from previous stays in the Welsh border region (NBSS 3.5). This was the day of the old Queen's funeral and of course it was on the TV, but thankfully not rammed down our throats. I spent a pleasant half hour enjoying my beer while looking around at the very good furniture, and the delightful pictures on the walls, and trying to avoid the TV in the corner.

Lovely place to visit, drink and eat. Over the years I have visited this establishment several times and in 2019 spent several days booked into an ensuite room with my nephew. The room was very nice, albeit with a sloping floor, which added more character to the place. It had a double bed in the main room and a smaller bed in an adjoining room. The owners and staff were very friendly and always on-hand to help, even the locals seemed friendly, which isn't always the case when 'out in the wilds'. A variety of drinks and a good choice for meals, all excellent. I would certainly visit again next year, health willing and hopefully will book into the same room again. Cab fare from Welshpool was exceptionally good value. Well worth a visit.
