Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Black Boy (JD Wetherspoon)

Very busy 'spoons on a Saturday evening, probably due to it being the local carnival day (something I hadn't factored into my plans). Still, it's probably doing good business most weekends anyway since other pubs doing food round here seem in short supply. Anyway, despite the traditional pub façade, the interior retains little of interest. The clips on the two banks of six handpumps were mostly duplicated too, but my swift Arkell's Kingsdown (£1.09, half) was in fine form.

I returned here on a Thursday afternoon just over a year after my previous visit. The beer choice wasn't that great again so I had a pint of the Banks's Devil's Backbone to go with the Flaming Dragon curry from their Curry Club. I was delighted to find they still had this in Wales instead of the not very hot Vindaloo across the border. Although the Cider Festival was still in progress I had a pint of a local cider they had in the fridge that I think was just £2.35.
I still rate this as a Spoons but on a late Thursday afternoon it was alarmingly quiet, the kitchen and bar staff seemed to be standing around chatting as they had nothing else to do. New town isn't a big town and although there was lots of traffic by the station I think Newtown is a town that people pass through rather than stop at. You have to wonder if it's just too big for the size of the town. I've reduced the score from 8 to 7.

Visit June 2015

This is a new Spoons having opened in late Spring 2014. It's an old town centre hotel with a fairly narrow frontage but inside it extends back a long way. Like most new Spoons it has a carpeted area at the front for food and the bar is at the back with a laminate flooring and tall tables and chairs. There is a patio on the right and a skylight at the front provides a lot of extra light at this time of year if it's not pouring with rain.
I arrived here before 09:00 on a Thursday morning so it was fairly quiet. I started with a large breakfast and the refill filter coffee offer. After the breakfast and three coffees I was buzzing with all the caffeine so tried the beer. There are two banks of six hand pumps here with three advertising a beer festival in Brecon so out of use and Ruddles, Abbot & Doom Bore doubled up. This left just three beers, Marston's Revisionist Juniper Pale, Wadworth Golden Perch and Wychwood White Wych. I was disappointed that there were no Locale beers on offer especially as there was a pile of leaflets advertising Brecon Brewery beers. I tried the Juniper Pale and the Golden Perch (£1.99) both of which were in first class condition.
I thought this was an excellent Spoons but it was a shame that the beer choice was limited.
