A large market town hotel, with many public rooms all tastefully decorated and furnished by someone with enviable panache. The bar is through the foyer and in a separate small room whose entrance is in the left corner of the main room (which has a magnificent fireplace). Four hand pumps with beers I've never heard of, and all from Welsh breweries: Llyn, Mantle and - a new one for me - Tut Lol. The last named's Crazy Peacock was superb, a 4.8% hoppy IPA (NBSS 4.5); my other was one of the Mantle beers, a 4.5% best bitter called Teifi, which was a little green but enjoyable (NBSS 3.5) - the two halves came to £5, which I guess is a regular price. I count this as a bit of a find, though it's in the Good Beer Guide, so I can't really claim much credit. Definitely worth a trip to Machynlleth - it's half a mile from the railway station.

Stayed here overnight as part of the latest attempt on the Wales Coast Path. Whilst still quite traditional, the emphasis has shifted onto food more than I recall from before. We ate here and the food was indeed first class, so bear that in mind. Three ales on at the bar (which is at the far left end off the lobby) all from Cader, a new one on me. A little hit-and-miss on the quality front, NBSS 2 & 3 for two I tried. The bedrooms upstairs are, to be polite, ‘old fashioned’. Anyway, this is still a decent place to drop in for one. 6.5

Most definitely the posh pub in Mach, this is another food-led establishment (the quality of which I’m told is reliably high) and also features a pizzeria. The front bar area hosts a lovely big inglenook fire with brightly decorated plates hung above it. Has a couple of ales on the go with a fairly rotating selection; Brains, Wye Valley and Greene King(!) all feature regularly. Prices are high but the beer I had was very good. No piped music of TV, so a good place to unwind with the paper. Closes in the afternoon. Rated 7

This is a rambling hotel bar with various different rooms. These are furnished in a generally old fashioned but comfortable style, in fact it's a fairly typical old hotel.
The serving area is roughly in the middle of it all with four hand pumps. Of these two were unused and two had the local Cwrw Cader Aur & Cwrw Coch. I went for the Cwrw Coch (£3.50) which was expensive but in reasonably good nick.
Despite being a hotel bar this one is worth a look and is much improved on what I can recall from a visit around 20 years ago.
