A low white washed building with two bars combined into one large room with a central servery. It’s very traditionally decorated with a plethora of brass stuff, pictures and old Sam Smiths posters on the white walls. There’s more than a nod in one corner to the “English Civil War “* battlefield of Marston Moor up the road with diagrams, prints, long arms and some Roundhead armour, as well as a cased diorama of a part of the battle on the back wall. Oliver Cromwell is represented but not King Charles or Prince Rupert. Cards are taken but phones and swearing are verboten. Beer wise there’s two pulls with a lacklustre Old Brewery Bitter plus seven keg taps of the normal Sam’s fare. The gents are outside at the back but reached under cover. A friendly village pub and handy for the almost useless Wetherby to York bus service.
*The War of the Three Kingdoms as historians now call it.

A nice, very traditional pub in typical Sam Smith's style, wonderfully dated and immaculately kept. There are two bars, with not a lot to choose between them, although I suspect the smaller side was once the public - both feature aged upholstery, peripheral benches, Britannia tables, lots of brasses and polished woodwork. The newest feature in the pub is probably the brick-faced bar counter, which I would guess dates from the 1980s. Note a little display marking the nearby battle of Marston Moor. Outside, there are some rustic tables in the car park and a grassed area beyond. Just OBB on draught, of course, but in very fine condition. Mr Humphrey might take his 'lack of modern distractions' a bit far, but it does make this a very pleasant, relaxing pub.
