Like the other two pubs in Woodhouse's Market Square, the Royal is a handsome, traditional pub, with fake half-timbering on the outside, and similar effects internally, though the original layout has clearly been altered at some time. I went in the larger room, a lounge, to the left on entering. (While waiting to be served from one of the two hand pumps I noticed that a football match was on the TV - and as luck would have it, it was my team Luton Town, playing top-of-the-table Bournemouth. We were 2-1 up when I arrived with about 35 minutes to play, and despite conceding a 78th minute equaliser we went on to win with the very last kick of the game. I had completely forgotten we had an early kickoff on Sky, as I had planned to watch Hallam FC at Retford, but a frozen pitch ruled that one out.)

There were half a dozen drinkers in the lounge, and a few others in the other bar, which I didn't visit. Most were drinking lager, Guinness or John Smiths Smooth as far as I could see, and my £3 pint of Bradfield Farmers Blonde was a bit lacklustre. (Would the alternative, Adnams Ghost Ship, have been any better? We'll never know.) Like a lot of former mining communities, there are not many real ale drinkers in Woodhouse, and with the self-fulfilling prophecy of expectation of poor beer resulting in low turnover leading to beer in poor condition leading to lower turnover, it's not likely to change much any time soon.

The Royal is a decent looking pub that is situated just off the market place and opposite the bus stops,so very handy if arriving in Woodhouse by bus.
Once inside the pub has two seperate rooms,i had a drink in the left room which was the lounge, this room was irregular in shape, the seating was comfy bench type with small stools and chairs, the floor was carpeted and there was some wood panelling, the bar to the right was square shaped and had a raised area to the right, there was also a pool table in this room.
There were four pumps on the bar with two unclipped and the other two having Tetley bitter on,i had a drink of this which went down well.
There was some decent background music playing, the lounge was very busy with older blokes.
I quite liked this pub.
