A classic pub of its type and if it isn't on the National Inventory it should be, although admittedly it has presumably been knocked through. Lovely high-ceilinged rooms with nice panelling and some good plasterwork; even the Billiard Room is still in use for pool. The place has a pleasant, relaxed feel but just a shame that the only cask ale on was an indifferent Bradfield Farmers Cherry - hardly a crowd-pleaser. Get a couple of good beers in and it would rise to a must-do.

I've been in here a few times since my review of 2013, but neglected to update the review. There has been real ale on here for two or three years, I think, and in fact there are now four hand pumps. The beers available at the time of my visit were mostly from quite a long way away, so I went for the most local, Peak Ales Bakewell Best, which was in very good condition. As I said before, what a lovely pub now that there's some real ale on the bar! I'll be back.

A popular and busy pub in a good looking stone building near the Hillsborough barracks. The bay windows have etched inscriptions: Billiard Room says one, and Smoke Room the other, but there is neither billiard table nor, thankfully, cigarette smoke inside. Any internal walls have long since been removed, but the large space is pleasantly furnished and the bar, a substantial one with a wooden elbow rail and a brass one for the feet, takes up most of the back wall. Behind it is an arch which features a handsome stained glass semi-circular panel advertising Wards Fine Malt Ales, though these too are not something that you will find here any more. The usual keg fonts are lined up: Carling, Stella, Guinness, Tetleys Smooth and John Smiths Crap. I had a half of Stones, which was tolerable, though so cold it took me half an hour to drink it. What a lovely pub this would be with half a dozen real ales on the bar!
