Update 7 years later:

A general facelift has seen much of the wall panelling overpainted in a grey-green shade, and it is no longer 'frayed round the edges'. Slightly less character though, but the beer range has increased with several ales from the Marston's range and guests.

Good town pub, apparently merged from several different buildings from the look of the outside. Inside has several distinct areas arranged round the bar. Nice traditional feel, with lots of dark colours, polished woodwork, well-upholstered benches etc, perhaps a little frayed round the edges but adding to the character. A very nice surprise, given that it is in a back street between the bus station and sorting office. A Thwaites pub, with a good selection of their ales, and Cask Marque. Food sounded reasonable although not sampled. Not quite as sexy as the beer exhibition pubs, but well worth a visit.

What a lovely pub. A very old Tudor exterior that's gone slightly cockeyed over the years. Inside is a traditional, if slightly modern interior with a few pleasant areas to sit. 6 handpulls on the bar with 4 Thwaites beers on and beers from Blue Bee and Thornbridge on on my visit. A short walk from the station and worth a visit. A friendly pub and I liked it.

Thwaites Original, Lancaster Bomber, & topical ‘Red Nose Bag'. Central semi-octagon(?) wood bar with brass rails at counter & floor level. Bar surrounded by sectioned, but open, carpetted seating areas and fabric-wood banquettes follow around the walls below windows, old photos provide decoration. Behind the bar to the rt is a dining room with nice stone fireplace & coal grate, but it is unfortunate that the old full-length slat windows offer a view of only some picnic sets then a paved area where some bus-workers were having a smoke. Thursday's blackboard specials were chicken & bacon pasta (£4.50) or lasagne verdi (£5.25) – both included garlic.. bread! Printed menus majored on cheap pub grub – eg fish&chips or steak&kidney pie were both £4, most wines were listed at <£10. Very quiet thurs 3pm and the 2 fruit machines may be invasive at other times, but most anoying was the music being neither on, nor off, creating the irritating tinny ‘bleed' effect from cheap headphones of an inconsiderate walkman/ipod user. The pub is not all bad, the beer was ok, but even with a location handy for trains & buses it needs to try harder in this town, and the interior is hardly sympathetic to a building purporting to be one of the oldest in Sheffield.
