As described below, this pleasant country pub is unspoilt despite the renovations; it has retained its character and has a pleasant, convivial atmosphere enhanced by an open fire in a Victorian fireplace. When we visited the garden was crammed full with transparent bubbles around benches and chairs for dining. The food was a little pricey but enjoyable. The staff were pleasant, helpful and welcoming. One ale on, Stonehenge Pigswill, which was sadly not in top condition. I’d be very happy to come back and eat, and hopefully the beer will be better next time.

The Rising Sun is situated well up Bowden Hill from the village of Lacock. Drinkers were being ushered towards the garden area, where there is an outdoor servery. It seemed a particular novelty to be able to order and retrieve your own beer from the bar!

The solitary real ale was Plain Ales Innocence, whilst they no longer stock real cider. But views of the Avon Valley from the garden make a visit worthwhile.

Located a mile or two outside the picturesque village of Lacock, this is well worth making the effort to get to if in the area, with it’s traditional, unspoilt charm and fantastic views across rolling countryside.

Internally, the original part of the pub runs along the front of the building and is all one open plan room, although considerably deeper at one end than the other. Old flagstones are on the floor which have been polished smooth over the years, and there are plenty of wooden beams on the ceiling adorned with bunches of hops and a couple of timber support posts as well. Walling is predominantly a shade of pale grey plasterwork, although there were some small sections of exposed stone in places as well as some bookcase effect wallpaper. A small shelf contained a collection of old beer bottles and a number of stuffed birds were on display in a glass case. A snug area at one end looked a cosy spot with a few old sofas clustered around a chimney breast with a wood burning stove, although the TV mounted up above this spoilt the effect somewhat. Fortunately the volume was off so this was not too intrusive. A conservatory extension at the rea looked to be a much more modern addition, but no doubt this makes the most of the views, as did the beer garden and decking area.

Beers on tap were Exeter Organic Real Ale, Goffs Fallen Knight and Moles Best, whilst a fourth pump appeared unused. Ciders were well represented with Thatcher’s Gold, Black Rat Original, Black Rat Perry and Cheddar Valley, as well as a box of Lilley’s Raspberry and Pear on the end of the bar counter. All in all, I thought this was a great pub and just the sort of place I could settle in for a good session.
