Al Bundy left this review about The Raven

Traditional locals pub. A L-shaped interior which is thin. Pool table to left of bar. 4 handpulls but only Wadsworth 6X on.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Raven

Busy city centre pub, with limited seating (or even standing room) around the 'L'-shaped bar. Also has a pool area down a couple of steps to one side and lots of screens showing live sport. Three of four handpumps in use, dispensing Hobgoblin, the seasonal Poppy from Charles Wells and Sadler's One Hop Stop (£2.45). A somewhat boisterous crowd in on a Saturday afternoon, so I didn't take long to finish my pint and move on.

Tucked away just behind the cathedral, The Raven is housed in a 19th century building and first opened as a pub in 1922. It was originally known as Crowther's Vaults. Owned by Enterprise, it’s had a very chequered history over the last few years, with several periods of closure. However, it does seem to be thriving once again, since re-opening in February.

Internally, it has a narrow L-shaped interior, divided into several drinking areas. There’s a handsome wooden bar back and plenty of wooden panelling to the left of the bar, augmented by a dark mustard colour scheme. With plenty of upholstered wall benches and traditional tables, it undoubtedly has a comfortable feel. The area to the left of the bar houses a pool table and there are two overhead TVs, plus a jukebox.

Four beers on hand pump when I called: John Smith’s Cask, Green King IPA, Black Sheep Bitter and Sharps Doom Bar. Perhaps, not the most stimulating of choices, but as they were all between £1.90 - £2.20 certainly excellent value, particularly as the two I tried were in good condition. To its credit, the pub also does a tasting platter, where three thirds may be tried for around £2.10. Talking to the friendly landlady, she told me of her plans to increase the choice of ales. The number of pumps has already increased from two to four and hopefully this will rise to six in the future. However, the prospect of some diversity seems limited, as the hard-core regulars were proving rather sniffy about the ‘too hoppy’ Doom Bar!

On the basis of this first visit, I quite liked The Raven. It’s undoubtedly aimed at the lower end of the mainstream market, but as a ‘pubbier’ alternative to the local ‘spoons it works very well. Not one for the more adventurous ale drinker, but worth a punt if you fancy a traditional beer.
