The Steam Packet’s location by the Knottingley and Goole Canal is taken advantage of by a decked seating area that overlooks the waterway. A slope runs down to the bank where I imagine mooring was once achievable, but the rocks and uneven surface make it look a little treacherous. The pub is found across a large car park which indicated that food would be available. In truth the only food I saw advertised was the Sunday lunch which is available from midday until 16:00 and is very reasonably priced at £6 for adults and £4 for children.
The interior consists of a public bar with dartboard to the left and larger lounge bar with pool table to the right. I do not recall any televisions and live sport was not advertised. There was some background music playing and I noted that a function room that is available for free hire. There is a quiz every Thursday from 20:00 and there is a late license until midnight on Friday/Saturday and until 23:00 on Sundays.
Standard keg products are available from the bar that also supports a couple of hand pumps. During my visit on Monday afternoon last week these were drawing Wychwood’s Jester Jack and Whitstable Brewery’s Rakau Single Hop. I found the service to be very friendly and I would enjoy a revisit to this pub.

A large and relatively uninspiring local with the exception of the large boat over the bar and the bar and the decking area outside from which to watch the real the real thing on the adjoining canal. Beers were from the Marston's stable: Wychwood Wizard's Staff, which ran out after one pint leaving only Jennings Honey Bole which was well kept and quaffable. Something of a real ale oasis in Knottingley.
