This rather large, imposing building opposite Huddersfield train station is apparently the town's oldest hotel and the place where the game of rugby league was founded back in 1895 - a fact that becomes apparent before you've even entered the building thanks to adverts outside for a rugby league museum within (although unfortunately not open on my visit).
As far as the pub aspect goes, non hotel guests are free to drink in the aptly named Founders Bar which is to the right of the lobby. This is a fairly small room with a short bar counter to the left as you enter, bare floorboards and some comfortable seating. The walls are unsurprisingly covered with all manner of rugby league photos covering all eras of the game, which would no doubt appeal to those who follow the sport. A TV screen was showing Sky Sports in the far corner of the room, but there was no sound and whatever sport had been on had now finished, so I was left watching mute punditry.
There is one handpull at the bar, but it was not in use, so I was faced with a grim choice between Worthington’s and Caffrey’s on tap. I tried the former and it was as disappointing as I'd feared, especially given the wealth of beer riches elsewhere in town.
I stayed in the hotel during my visit and thought it was a decent enough place with friendly staff and tidy rooms, but as far as the bar goes, it was a real let down. Fans of rugby league should pop in for a quick nose around but anyone looking for a decent pint can take their pick from the two station bars next door or the Sportsman which is just around the corner.
