After a rather frustrating afternoon finding a couple of pubs closed that I'd expected to be open, the Red Rooster was my second stop on a West Yorkshire crawl, following the Marsh Liberal Club.
The Red Rooster sits in an unassuming location on a corner of the road in a bit of a dip. It is opposite a trading estate and nextdoor to some kind of car dealership, all of which makes parking a little tricky if you arrive by car.
Situated up a few steps from the road, there is a quaint outdoor drinking area to the front, whilst the interior has a number of different secluded areas. Although it looks as if it may have been opened up somewhat from its original layout. The bar is in front of you as you enter and currently has 6 handpulls, with the claim to always have a dark beer on and a couple of bitters. The claim was true for my visit, with the selection being Copper Dragon Black Gold, Timothy Taylor Boltmaker & Knowle Spring, Abbeydale Deception, Oakham Citra & Darkland Wolfenbrau. The Citra seems to be a regular.
The barmaid was friendly and there were also a handful of other customers in on my mid-Thursday afternoon visit. My Black Gold was a nice enough mild. It was certainly pleasing to find a dark beer.

Single room GBG 2015 listed pub about three quarters of a mile from Central Brighouse along the canal towards Elland. It's a mid to late Victorian stone building renovated in sympathetic style, some evidence of a 1930s makeover exists in the stained glass on the gents door and that into the tiny ladies loo. New flag floor and exposed stone with a chunky counter to one side along with a brick fireplace give a new old look. Nine pulls of smaller brewery beers in good nick and a small range of national kegs plus Erdinger. Fairly traditional furnishings and a big screen, the decor is beer related. Yes it's worth the walk out either along the main road or the slightly longer but prettier canal tow path route. I had a Northern Alchemy beer described by the barman as "late hopped" so it might be a bit hazy, it was opaque so poor brewing skills I'd say.

This is an outstanding ale house,a stiff and undulating walk from the town centre which defeated the crew after a shed full and required the use of a cab to get back.Classic West Yorkshire stone exterior,with an open plan interior yet with four distinct areas. There is a small library to the side of the bar with two Chesterfield uprights with a large banquette at the other end of the bar,traditional furniture infront of the flatscreen and a seperate side section .The flag stone floor and the traditional doors to the Ladies and Gents were pleasing details.
The star here is the ale,every pint consumer was in top condition and the regular GBG entry is most deserved.The nine handpumps have regular ales in the shapes of TT Landlord & Boltmaker,Saltaire Blonde,Abbeydale Moonshine,and Moorhouses Blonde Witch with four guests being Mallinsons Mount Pleasant MILD,Roosters Stars and Stripes (excellent),Titanic Cappuchino (great) and Saltaire South Pacific Pale on my visit.The use of extra tight sparklers further enhances the taste of all those Locales that suit this dispense method. The pub has also been awarded Oakadamy status and later on in the session Oakham Improbability came on ,and was well received by the knott of dedicated drinkers at the bar.The service was impeccable,friendly and helpful .Not far from The Calder and Hebble Navigation and near a nature reserve ,this is one of the outstanding pubs in the area,and can stand toe to toe with leading ale houses for miles around.Top drawer.
