Situated on the outskirts of Shoreham by the old toll bridge, this is a low-ceilinged 16th century building with incredibly low-beamed ceilings, snug drinking areas, wooden booth seating and log fireplace with brasses. Two dining areas either side of the bar (meze ‘four for a tenner’) with outside drinking areas front and back. Five handpumps dispensing a range of microbrewery ales though I don’t recall the quality being particularly brilliant, not enough to stop me heading off to explore elsewhere anyway.

If it is real ale you are after, try the Amsterdam across the road first, then come into the Red Lion. I guarantee you will detect an upturn in quality. It's a very quaint lower bar area and I was obviously lucky with the barman who was able to list the qualities of the various real ales on offer. Also good to eat out in the garden area on a nice day if you stay upwind of the many smokers taking refuge here!.

Harveys, Kings Old Ale, Itchen Valley Godfather, One Hop, & Hampshire Fallover (6%). VERY low ceiling around main bar area where a roaring log fire made for a warm welcome, some wooden booth seating then leads to a family room at one end, and away from the bar in the other direction is a higher ceilinged room set up for dining. Covered area out back so the smokers needn't get wet. Great beer & lovely pub, why oh why do we have to suffer radio commercials in such a place?
