A charming old pub located off the main road between West Hoathly and Ardingly. Excellent food and well kept ales together with the attractiveness of the premises both visually and in general ambience mean booking is advisable at peak times. A pleasant and well-kept garden adds to the appeal although there can be a bit of noise from the road.

Visited lunchtime on a sunny August bank Holiday Monday. From previous reports by colleagues it seems we were lucky to find space, it can be a very busy place apparently, read on to find out why this is the case

Car parking spaces are a bit limited, but, to be fair, back in the 14th century they never really thought about car parking. When we left there were cars waiting for our space. Do not let this put you off visiting.

On entering you can go left or right, to left is bar area, to right is restaurant area. Naturally given the age of the building it is all low beams, ingle nook fireplace etc, but all tastefully done and not stooped to mock horse brasses or Toby jugs

As we were eating, and there were no empty tables left in the bar area for diners we were shown into the restaurant area by a very charming & polite waitress, from what I could see there is no difference, except for no bar in there.

Plenty of spaces between tables, so not fallen for the "squeeze more bums in" fault so often found in popular venues

3 hand pulls, I had Harvey's Sussex best, which was a very pleasant pint [£3.10], my companion had coffee [£2.10], which was pronounced excellent. As we were in restaurant area these were brought to us at our table

Food was excellent & reasonably priced given the location and clientèle, I had local ham, eggs & chips £8.95, companion had smoked salmon + salad £9.95. Both meals were freshly prepared and very good. There is a sample menu on the web site

There is a fair sized garden as well for either eating, drinking, smoking etc

There is only one drawback, the toilets are down steps, those 14th century builders fault again, so if steps / stairs a problem may not suit, there is a ramp down to dining area, but if you want a loo after a couple of pints then check first if alternatives are available before settling down

Would I go back? Certainly, and it is worth a small detour if in area, say visiting National Trust at Wakehurst Place, eat & drink here instead of there, may cost a bit more, but worth every penny
