This is another of Warrington's pubs that is blessed with a Regionally Important Historic Interior, so I called in before the match even though I knew there was no likelihood of getting any real ale. It was fairly busy, as may be imagined given how close to the ground this pub is situated. There was quite a press (nearly said scrum) around the bar counter that serves a sort of drinking corridor, so I made my way round to the front room and was served fairly quickly. This pub feels like a real blast from the past, as I must have been in countless pubs like this in the 70s and 80s, but the vast majority of them have either closed and been converted to flats or convenience stores, or have had the walls ripped out and become drinking barns. Definitely worth a visit on that score. Even though it means drinking something other than real ale.

A rough-and-ready, tall Victorian-era corner pub a stone's throw from the Warrington Wolves' stadium. Internally, it seems to be split into 4(!) rooms - the main bar, a snug, a large, darts-only room, and a further room housing a pool table; a frosted glass door leads to the latter room and is entitled 'News Room'. The main bar area is high-ceilinged with faux-cornices, and one-third-high wood panelling. Darts trophies abounded above the bar area and there were a handful of Warrington RFC pictures as you would expect given the vicinity. A flat-screen TV played Emmerdale high up in the top corner of the bar to no-one's attention, and predictably, no real ale was on offer; Tetley's, John Smith's and Mann's Chestnut Mild were the keg options. Being the hottest day of the year, I plumped for a pint of Heineken lager, which was proffered at £2.90 (who said it's grim up North?). The grizzled locals seemed harmless enough, but I decided to retreat outside to what is ostensibly a parking area, which caught the full force of the late evening sun (it was still 30-degrees plus) where a portable stereo blasted out Smooth FM's latest, which ironically fitted right in with the unlikely vibe. Despite its massive misgivings, I actually quite enjoyed this place, and even got a friendly goodbye from the landlord, with no allusion to my southern tones. It seems to be serving a purpose, so unless you're desperate to make a 'tick', leave them to it, otherwise, it's maybe worth a ponder...
