Bit of a dim place, red and white colours inside and a bit of a pedestrian feel; ‘a slightly club atmosphere’ is the pretty astute summation below – comfy without being cosy. Good music, at least. Six cask on, a very samey mix of regionals; 2x Wye Valley, Taylor’s Knowle Spring, Hobgoblin and St Austell Proper Job. My Butty was GBG quality (NBSS 3.5) and it is listed, fairly, in The Book. Didn’t fancy lingering though. 6.5

Busiest of the Good Beer Guide pubs - and there is little chance I would have found this without the guide.
A large single roomer, with a long bar. Five real ales on, including Wye Valley and chosen St Austell Proper Job.
Two screens - one showing football (Man U friendly) and one with the racing from Newmarket.
Decent back street boozer. Great views of the church on the hill when leaving.

Good honest local pub tucked away east of the town centre. The bar is to left as you enter, ahead is a very long function room with access to the servery. The bar proper is across the front width of the building with a counter in the middle to the left. A slightly club atmosphere inhabits the place, maybe the bland white walls, although with black and white photos as decor, it could be the banquette seating at wooden tables, the industrial carpet or the tongue and groove counter in lighter wood. Not sure, there are untouched bits of a nineteen thirties pub waving at you here and there. Six pumps with nicely kept beers, three from Wye Valley plus Green Duck, Salopian and er…Tribute. Keg tastes are catered for with, oh lots of stuff including two varieties of Carling , yellow and white handles, Coors, Madri, Guinness, Worthingtons (!), and some sort of cider presumably reprocessed in Burton like the the other stuff ( no not Guinness obviously). Big screen in the corner showing sports stuff. GBG 2023 listed but possibly not worth a detour, although my preferences being obviously different to Steve C I found the tattooed barmaid/landlady a very pleasant person.
