This pub has recently appeared in the GBG so I was tempted to have a look on the way from the Beacon to the Bulls Head. Inside it looks like it has recently been refurbished with a new carpet and furniture. It's a single room with a dining area off to one side. The bar area just has normal tables and chairs. The garden seemed to be closed off possibly because some work was going on.
The bar has four hand pumps which on my visit had Oakham Bishops Farewell, Thornbridge Jaipur & Baize and Brass Castle Mosaic. I went for the Baize which was a strong chocolate mint stout in excellent condition. I forgot to note the price but think it was just over three quid.
This place is a complete contrast to the throwback in time that is the Beacon Hotel but some people may prefer that. It's certainly worth a look on the basis of the beers served on my visit.

I opened the door to the Beacon Hotel over the road and found a long queue at the bar so I decided to have a quick half in the White Lion whilst the queue died down. This seems to be a food led pub with kitchen opening times of noon until 15:00 and 17:00 until 23:00 during the week, noon until 23:00 on Saturdays and noon until 22:30 Sundays. The bar is stocked with a standard draught range and one of the hand pumps was unused leaving Pardoes Entire as the lone ale option. I had a half which I found to be sub-standard and I couldn’t finish it.

This place maybe ok for a bit of carvery, but I’ll stick to the Beacon next time I’m in the area.

A white rendered detached pub and eatery, with a few sparse fake exterior black beams, etched windows and a beer garden.

The interior has two rooms, one of which is a function room that I didn’t see. The main room is open plan and accessed through the entrance in the car park. It is generally food orientated, with little internal areas and is in red and green pattered wallpaper, half cream walls and some wood panel. There are a couple of fake brick looking fireplaces and there wasn’t much in the way of pictures or ephemera, just a few mirrors and not heavy handed Xmas decorations. The place does a lunch time carvery, served from a mobile unit, as well as a general menu, including a 2 for £10. I had the chicken curry and it was fine. The service was friendly and the clientele mixed – all eating. The back ground music was general and quiet, I didn’t see a TV.

Beer; tap stuff, with a decent Bishops Castle XXX and an untried Cleric’s Cure on handpull

This place was a nice surprise. To be honest, I didn’t expect much as it is foody orientated and opposite the Beacon. But the fact that it does a general menu, along with the fact that it stocks a brewery that no other place around does means that is worth thinking about for a bite to eat, or simply a pint. Still, it isn’t a pub that I could spend all day in, but I would more than happily return to.
