The Vine has a front carpeted seating area with a worn U-shaped tartan banquette that runs across the front wall and up the right before coming back around to the left to separate this front seating area form the pool table behind that is faced by the serving counter that runs up the left-hand wall. There’s some raised seating at the rear where all the locals were gathered and televisions throughout were airing muted Sports while background music played. Standard and premium keg products were available from the counter that supports four unused hand pumps. This is a boozer full of Villa fans in an area that is being regenerated, much to the dismay of the pub and its locals. I wasn’t made to feel unwelcome, but as a non-local, I’ll not be visiting here again.

A very interesting survivor of a pub. It looks at odds with everything... I am guessing it is a Victorian corner pub but the rest of the street has been replaced with 1960s style housing. The upper floors don't even seem to match the ground floors. And despite being spitting distance from Broad Street and five ways, it is in a quiet location that seems both residential and commercial.
Inside, it seems untouched - with half wall panelling. A top room, drops down to a pool room in the centre and possible another room behind that. A bar running down the side of the pool room.
The A-frame board outside proclaimed Real Ale. There were two pumps on but neither with clips. Not sure I would have risked cask in a low turnover pub during a heatwave in any case. The keg options were very limited - A caffreys stout, M&B Mild and the only "premium" lager was madri. For which I had my first ever pint :-)
But don't tell anyone that.

I used this pub regularly when a student living in the area in the late 70's.This street corner boozer hasn't really changed in the 45 years since,it is located in a deteriorating estate,has some pleasing heritage curved front windows with good etched glass and retains a pleasant interior.The side entrance no longer works,you enter into the bar with a cosy ,traditional seating area,then a pool table with small screens above,then the left sided bar before a rear section behind with a large sports flatscreen on the wall.This rear section with large banquette, its framed pictures of the local area and good collection of china plates is the most restful part and does include two gaming machines but also some sports memorabilia.
Food is served,free newspapers are in a rack and the bar stools are well used by regulars.There is an excellent soundtrack and the volume on the sports screens was well controlled on my Wednesday afternoon visit.
The A board outside talks about real ales,but the four handpumps were not clipped ,the lager selection is very mainstream although there is a keg M&B Mild tap.( My Carlsberg was a very reasonable £3.60)It's a friendly place ,off the beaten track and used mainly by local folk and caters well for those that want televised sports both terrestrial and Sky Sports.
The lack of real ale took a point off my rating but this proper boozer is well worth a visit for it's tradition.Just about the only proper pub for quite a long way,it deserves a visit .
