This is a detached Ember Inns pub/eatery, with patio areas. It was built in 1901 by the Holder's Brewery and it replaced the Pershore Road Tavern, which was on the same site. There was a bowling green at the back. It is in a 17th century style, mainly being in red brick, with the lower frontage now white painted. It has some moulding with a front gable. The nicest features are the brewery crest and the projecting window towers. The interior has of course been converted to open plan, and this Ember has several areas, mainly split by hearth features, and all of which look like different people's from rooms, but thankfully without the ubiquitous vases and twigs that so many Ember Inns employ. The decor has green, white and patterned wallpapers and a red patterned carpet and some old local photos are on the walls. The music was general and mixed. The service was fine and the place busy with maturer people, nearly all dining. Beer; usual tap stuff with Peroni. On handpull there were; Purity UBU, Brew XI, Downton Chocolate Orange Delight, Butty Bach, Orkney Dark Island, Fullers Steel and a more than decent Thwaites Nutty Black - although £3.09 a pint. Whilst it can feel a little like being in the Ideal Homes Exhibition, it is far better than many other Ember pubs. It has good beer choice and quality, no kid's grabbing machines and more importantly, I didn't see any twigs. I definitely would return to this one and stay for a few. UPDATE - A few days later - and i did return and went through their beer choices - excellent.

An Ember Inn and decorated and feels as such, the occasional screams of babies can be heard.

However, it does manage to balance the chain/family/pub/drinking thing quite well and there are various separate areas and the layout of quite an old building helps the balance. There is a bubbly feel, and its close proximety to the cricket ground also seems to attract business clients.

The staff are good, not always the case with big chain pubs and there are three real ales, the quality of which was excellent.

Actually a nice place.
